If you’re new to the game and wondering how to play Rummy, this simple guide will walk you through the basics.

What is Rummy?

Rummy is a matching card game where the main goal is to form sets and sequences from the cards in your hand. It can be played by 2 or more players and typically uses one or two standard decks of 52 cards (including jokers in some variations).

Objective of Rummy

The main objective in Rummy is to arrange all the cards in your hand into valid sequences and/or sets. In most versions, the winner is the first player to form the required combinations and make a valid declaration.

Key Terms You Should Know

Sequence (Run): 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4♦ 5♦ 6♦).

Set (Group): 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g., 7♦ 7♣ 7♠).

Pure Sequence: A sequence without a joker.

Impure Sequence: A sequence that includes a joker.

Joker: A wild card that can substitute any other card.

How Many Cards Are Dealt?

In 13-card Rummy (most common): Each player is dealt 13 cards.

In Gin Rummy: Each player gets 10 cards.

In Rummy 500: The number varies based on players (usually 7–13 cards).

Setup

1. Deck: Use 1 or 2 decks depending on the number of players.

2. Dealer: Randomly chosen or rotates each round.

3. Card Distribution: Players receive their cards.

4. Open Deck: One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile.

5. Closed Deck: The rest of the cards form a draw pile.

Game Play

1. Draw a Card: On your turn, pick one card — either from the draw pile or the top of the discard pile.

2. Form Combinations: Try to form valid sets or sequences with your cards.

3. Discard a Card: End your turn by discarding one card to the open pile.

4. Declare: Once you have the required combinations (usually at least two sequences, one of them pure), you can declare your hand.

Winning the Game

To win a game of Rummy:

You must have at least two sequences.

One sequence must be a pure sequence.

The rest of your cards should be arranged in valid sequences or sets.

Once your hand is ready, declare and show your cards.

If your declaration is valid, you win. If not, you receive penalty points.

Scoring in Rummy (Indian Format)

Face cards (J, Q, K, A): 10 points each.

Number cards: Face value.

Joker: 0 points.

The winner gets 0 points, and other players get points based on unmatched cards.

The aim is to score the least points across games.

Tips to Get Better at Rummy

Always try to form a pure sequence early.

Discard high-point cards you don’t need.

Watch what cards others pick and discard.

Use jokers wisely — in sets or impure sequences.

Final Thoughts

Rummy is a game that’s easy to learn but hard to master — and that’s part of what makes it so exciting. With just a standard deck of cards and a few friends (or an online app), you can jump into a game anytime. Once you get comfortable with the rules, you’ll discover that every hand brings a new challenge and new ways to win.
